Chalkboard Paint

An old cabinet door, a little bit of chalkboard paint, add a little color and wooden pegs. What do you have? A great place to hang a sweater or keys as you enter the back door. Maybe you prefer a kitchen chalkboard to keep pot holders and towels handy.

We have other decorative hooks I've made for our back entrance for convenience, organization and to spruce it up a bit. We also have old wood boxes stacked as a place to put shoes and stuff. Keeps the back entrance neat and tidy.

Laissez les bon temps roulez is written in the center of the chalkboard wall rack. It's pronounced, lay say lay bon ton roolay, which is Cajun's French for, let the good times roll.

The wall rack sign is available for purchase at DMS's Upcycled Products Store.

Cajun French was my inspiration because we love visiting New Orleans for the great food, music, drink and ambiance. When Greg had his restaurant he served Cajun dishes such as gumbo and jambalaya. He had a restaurant on the first level and a bar on the second level, so of course we had plenty of zydeco, jazz and blues music. We have a lot of good memories from the restaurant and the sign represents a little piece of it.

The cabinet door used for the chalkboard wall rack was rescued by my sister-n-law before it ended up in the bonfire at her Labor Day party. The door had a lot of character with white chipping paint and a black knob I decided to leave in place. I didn't sand away the character, I simply enhanced it by cleaning the chipping paint away and painting the frame with yellow ochre.

I didn't sand a smooth service on the inside panel either. I wanted to keep the cracking aged look so I just spray painted with black chalkboard paint and wrote my message with white chalk. Next, I drilled three holes on the bottom of the door and placed the wooden pegs inside the holes with wood glue.

This was an easy, couple hour project including drying time.

Materials needed for making a chalkboard wall rack;

  • Paneled Cabinet Door
  • Paint (I used small bottles of craft acrylic paint, yellow ochre and raw sienna)
  • Krylon Black Chalkboard Paint
  • White Chalk
  • Wood Pegs
  • Wood Glue

How to make;

Clean door, remove chipping paint and door hinges. Cover door frame, paint inside panel with Krylon black chalkboard paint. Paint out side frame with yellow ochre. Drill three holes at bottom of door for wood pegs. Place wood glue on pegs and insert into holes. Paint wood pegs using raw sienna first and than wash a little yellow ochre over top. Place picture hanging hooks and wire on the back of the chalkboard wall rack and place it on the wall.
