Decorating Considerations

Guest Post on Decorating Considerations

It's easy to decide on something and then do it, like go out to eat and then catch a movie. You didn't plan it but on Thursday night, there may be nothing on television and the movie you wanted to see is coming on.

There are also decisions that you cannot do on the spur of the moment, like decorate your home. What you like one minute may look totally different on another day. Therefore, before you begin decorating your room here are some questions that you need to make sure you know the answer to.

What is the room going to be used for? There are rooms in your home that are for the family, for the guests, or just for you. The room needs a purpose and this is the most important question that you will ask yourself when it comes to home decor. If you don't get the feel of the room then you may end up creating a look that you don't like and spending a lot of money to get it.

How often will the room be used? If you do not plan to use the room often then don't clutter it up with furniture that you have to dust all the time. Instead, make the room easy to walk out of and leave for a period of time before it needs some attention. Schedule to clean and dust it on a regular basis but you shouldn't have to do too much to it in between.

What color do I use in the room? There are so many different colors to choose from and when you want to create a new look in a room, now is the chance to also change the color. If you leave the color the same, you won't need to buy as much but you will be happy with your financial situation.

How's the lighting in the room? Do you have enough of the sunlight coming into the room or do you have trees blocking most of the sun? You want a room that has ample amounts of natural sun streaming in the window. It's healthier for you and it can make a difference in your decor.

What is my focal point? The focal point will help you determine where everything will go in the room. It may be a fireplace or it may be a book that sits on the shelf. When deciding your focal point, walk out of the room and then wait a few seconds before returning again.

When you first glance in the room what do you see first? This should be your focal point if possible. Now you need to rearrange the furniture so everything blends in with the look. It's not only about the furniture; it is also about placing the wall hangings and accessories like area rugs. Use oriental rugs for a sophisticated look or use southwestern rugs for a western style decor.

Once you answer these questions you will have a better idea of what you want and when you can get it.
