Fall Decor
Give Old Fall Decorations a New Life Have you given any thought to your fall decor for this year? I'm guessing you don't throw away last years fall and Halloween decorations and start over new every year. But, if your anything like me you like to change it up. You probably get tired of using the same fall decorations year after year. How do you get a new look without buying and making all new decorations every year? Move decorations to different locations of your house. Change them completely with paint or maybe just rearrange them a little bit. Also, introduce a few new fall and Halloween decorations. A new look for old Halloween Decorations; We found several witch, mummy and Frankenstein Halloween decorations at a flea market. I left them the way they were last year, but I made some changes this year in several different ways.
I spray painted one each with silver metallic, and copper paint. Very simple, and they look like entirely different decorations.
The heads were cut off another set to make a mummy, Frankenstein and witch candy and cookie jars. My most favorite is the witch that looks like antique mercury glass or tarnished silver. I decided to use aluminum foil to achieve this look and to my surprise it worked. The only bad part, it took me about five hours to cover the witch.
I cut pieces of foil and glued them to the witch with mod podge. I pressed the cut pieces onto the witch to mold the foil to the face features and other features. It worked really well, you can even see the spider on her chest.
Next, I glazed over the foil with a burnt umber paint wash to make the witch look tarnished and old. After the paint dried, I applied one coat of mod podge to protect the foil finish. The witch turned out even better than I imagined.
Relocate and rearrange; Sometimes it just takes a new location to make a decoration look different. I made a large corn husk wreath last year for above our fireplace. It's been relocated to hang outside our sun room windows.
Our door wreath from last year is the same wreath with a few changes. I've always liked the large corn husk wreath I made last year, so I made the door wreath similar. Last year I took a grapevine wreath, wrapped it with corn husk and tied Indian corn on one side. This year I took the wreath apart and cut the corn husk into strips. Tucked the strips into the grapevine wreath. Filled in where needed with burlap strips. Finished by wiring small pine cones to the vines.
Our cornucopia from last year has the same gourds from last year that I dried out and painted for this year. It was completed with pine cones, acorns and colorful fall leaves.
A large glass hurricane that was filled with pine cones last year took on a new look with colorful fall leaves, pine cones and gourds.
Add a few new decorations; I made mirrored pumpkins that turned out really amazing. I was able to experiment with a new spray paint that works wonders, Looking Glass Mirror Paint by Krylon. $2 glass pumpkins were transformed into what looks like mercury glass.
I also had fun making candle holders that have the look of hand blown glass. Just stack clear glass footed dessert bowls, dessert plates, vases and candle holders for a simple and elegant look. The candle holders are decorated with acorns.
