Guest Post on How To Create Floral Themes Frugally

floral themes

Floral themes can be a charming way to introduce an outdoors feeling indoors. What's more, so many floral themed items are available through frugal outlets that it's possible to bring this theme to life even on a tight budget.

For starters, consider rearranging your living room using gorgeous floral rugs. A sofa and a couple of armchairs arranged in a U-shaped on a floral rug create a perfect conversation space. More floral rugs in smaller sizes can be used elsewhere in the room, such as a corner reading nook, or at the room's entryway.

Another option would be to choose rugs in solid colors, such as pink rugs, green rugs, or white rugs, to give some relief from the floral theme and keep the decor from becoming too busy.

Windows and doors are excellent places to add floral touches. Swag drapes for windows or sliding glass doors can be easily made using lengths of floral or ivy print fabric.

While some home decorators will want to run up a simple hem in the fabric with a sewing machine, others merely trim the edges with pinking shears for a completely innovative look. In most cases it's best to drape the swag over simple curtain rods or through a couple of ring holders or even decorative doorknockers. Twin-size flat floral sheets from thrift stores also would work.

Thrift stores and yard sales also can be excellent sources for pretty floral tins to serve as decorations on a fireplace mantel or in the kitchen. An added benefit of these tins is that they can be used for their actual purpose - to store things! This can help to de-clutter a living room or family room and to store foodstuffs in the kitchen.

Dress up the walls with a stencil border of flowers or ivy leaves. This border could be painted around a window in place of curtains, or stenciled on the wall up near the ceiling. Craft stores feature many designs of stencils along with instructions and supplies for their application.

Floral tablecloths and chair pads for the dining room or breakfast nook also are a good way to carry out a floral theme. These accessories can be purchased inexpensively at yard sales, thrift stores and at clearance sales for discount retail stores. A mixture of floral patterns in chair pads, for instance, would work just fine in a Shabby Chic decor style.

Wicker, in both furniture and baskets, offers a great complement to a floral theme. Wicker love seats and chairs can have floral cushions and lots of floral pillows. Traditional wicker is made from twisted grapevine, wood or rattan, but today wicker made from plastic resin is virtually undetectable from traditional styles, and is easier to clean. Avoid wicker made from twisted paper, as it will rot quickly if it comes into contact with water.

Wicker baskets also fit a floral theme and provide added storage space. Baskets are great for catching anything: mail, magazines, books, papers, bills, keys and more. Wicker baskets without handles also make superb plant containers. Dress up the baskets even more by cutting a strip of floral fabric and tie it around the basket with a bow.

Finally, add some live flowering plants and a few silk flower swags from the local dollar-only store and your floral themed room is complete.
