Home Decor AccessoryHere's a simple home decor accessory project. I'm sure you have seen accent balls in the decor departments of stores. They can be used for filling vases or bowls as an accent piece and range in price from $3 to about $9.
I have a large wood bowl that is about 24 inches in diameter that I wanted to fill with accent balls. When I figured out it would be about $100 to purchase enough to fill my bowl, I decided I could make them. After the holidays I got rid of decorations I haven't used for years. I had these ornaments that were a styrofoam base with red a white silk thread around them. Instead of throwing them out I recycled them for my accent balls. It was simple to do with paper mache. I used some wrapping paper I didn't want anymore, made paper mache, and than painted the balls with gloss house paint I already had. The project didn't cost me anything, just the time it took me to make them.
1)If you would like to make accent balls for your self, any size styrofoam ball can be used. 2)Use strips or pieces of newspaper or wrapping paper. 3)Make paper mache by mixing water and flour until you have a thin creamy mixture. 4)Dip paper in paper mache mixture and place on the styrofoam balls covering completely. 5)Let the paper mache balls dry and than 6)choose the color and type of paint you would like to use.
There are no rules, you can experiment with different materials to use for the balls such as balloons. They can be different shapes and sizes, painted, or stained, maybe you want a high gloss or no gloss, it's up to you. Perhaps find different materials at a craft store to wrap the accent balls with to give them different textures. I have fun using accent balls for different decorating ideas. Over the holidays I used them inside glass vases for candle holders. The accent balls looked great with the glass candle holders, so I kept them around after the holidays. Please feel free to share any ideas you may have for making accent balls or any other fillers for vases and bowls.
