Modge Podge

Modge Podge and Crackle Painting

I know, modge podge and crackle painting are a strange combination, but it just so happens I recently worked on two easy projects using both techniques.

I think everyone has used modge podge except for me, so I thought it was about time I did. Soon after I started my project, I decided a little practicing is definitely a good idea.

I painted a box white and used mod podge to attach old school papers of stories our daughter wrote when she was a little girl. I decorated the top and front door of the box with these stories.

The project took me longer than I anticipated. I cut out different stories and attached them to the box like a puzzle.

When using the mod podge, I had problems with the paper forming bubbles and wrinkles. I soon figured out a very thin coat of mod podge is all that's required to attach the paper to the box. Let dry, and paint thin coats of mod podge on top of the paper. I used a total of three coats that formed a clear, shinny protective finish.

I really like how the box turned out. I placed it in our bathroom so every morning it puts a smile on our face when we read one of the stories. I will defiantly have more mod podge projects in the future.

Crackle painting is a technique I have always wanted to try. I have a very small stool or table that Greg picked up on one of his junk shopping trips. I decided it was time to do something with it.

The information I have read about crackle painting said it is an easy technique, just use Elmer's glue. I didn't have Elmers craft glue but I did have Elmer's wood glue, so I decided to start the project.

I also read the under coat should be a darker color to achieve the right effect. The table was already stained a dark color so I sanded the top of the table to dull the finish so the glue would adhere.

I applied the glue and let dry until it was tacky. I painted over the glue with a semi gloss cream color paint and let the crackling begin.

I decided a little practice is in order for this technique as well. From my finished project I found out the thicker the layer of glue, the bigger the cracks, the thinner the layer of glue the smaller the cracks.

I like how this project turned out too. The cracking technique was easier than I thought and one that I will try again.
