Painted Dishes
These hand painted dishes are an easy and inexpensive way to jazz up your dinner table for the holidays or special occasions. I gave these plain chargers and goblets a little design and color
with glass paint.
I'm a very casual person, although, I do like table linens and special occasion dishes like the depression glass pictured. Placing a painted charger under the depression glass dinner plate along with a painted goblet, makes it less formal and a little more playful. The linen napkins have sheer flowers, very pretty but a little too feminine and formal for me. I gave them a more casual tone by adding a little texture.
I made the napkin holders out of twine with beads sewn on the bottom. Again the twine is a rough material softened by adding the beads. This is also an easy and very inexpensive project. I painted the charger and goblet with gold glass paint. Some glass paint calls for a conditioner first finishing with a glaze after painting. Follow the manufactures instructions. The depression glass has a gold tone, so I followed through with gold colors. I copied a pattern from the depression glass for the edge of the chargers. I painted horizontal and vertical lines on the glass goblets varying the widths and spacing and added a touch of green paint. Another idea for painting glass goblets is with white frost paint to give them an etched glass look. Do a little planning ahead when painting the charger so the design is painted evenly around the plate. The hand painted look doesn't have to be perfect, although, you do not want your last design to look squeezed in or way larger than the other designs.
To make the napkin holder, I cut the twine to my desired length and sewed beads to the bottom of each end. I wrapped the twine around the napkin and looped it through. For the table centerpiece, I added even more texture with pinecones, pepper berries, and ornaments. I made a pedestal cake plate to hold candles and eucalyptus topiaries in terra cotta pots. The table runner is made from a burlap sack.
