Pedestal Cake Plates

pedestal plates

Place hor d'oeuvres, dessert, or main courses on pedestal cake plates to add a little interest to your next buffet or dinner table. They're also great for a decorative display of flowers, small gifts, ornaments, candles and greens.

Make an assortment of pedestal cake plates with platters, chargers, dinner and salad plates, along with footed sundae glasses, candy dishes, vases and bowls. You can also make your own glass candle holders by using this method of staking glass pieces.

Add interest to any buffet by using risers for food presentation, old boxes, cake plates, or glasses. Look around your house, even outside for inspiration.

The pedestal plates pictured at the bottom of this page, were made with dishes I already have and a few pieces I bought from Goodwill and Restore. The second hand stores are great places to find an assortment of dishes for as low as 50 cents each.

Prevent the glass pieces from slipping by adhering Fun Tack between the layers. I like to take mine apart, easier for storing. If you want something more permanent use an industrial strength clear craft adhesive.

For a permanent pedestal plate make sure it's balanced. Using a ruler find the center point on the back of the plate and make a dot. Place a compass on your center dot and lightly draw a circle the same size as the corresponding pedestal. Place the adhesive on your pedestal and glue it to your plate. Let adhesive dry or set up before continuing.

For more color and decoration fill the pedestal with flowers, pinecones, berries, sea shells, beads, or colored water.
