Playroom Decorating Ideas
Playroom Decorating Ideas We have a space in the attic just for the grandkids. It's their very own indoor tree house playroom. Since the attic is on the 3rd floor at tree top level, we thought a tree house theme was fitting. Since we had a tree house theme, we decided to recycle an old tire that was sitting around in the garage waiting to be taken to the dump. It became a tire chair. The kids think it's awesome. We try to emphasize "chair" so they don't get too crazy swinging on it. If you want to make a tire chair this is what Greg did. He washed the tire at the car wash and then scrubbed it using a brush and bleach water. He drilled holes in the top of the tire, inserted rope in the holes, used washers for the end of the rope before securing with knots. Greg joined the ropes at the ceiling and looped them through a heavy duty eye hook that was screwed into a stud. He secured the ropes with knots.
This summer when the kids came to Ohio to visit, we decided it would be cool to paint a tree on the wall behind the tire chair. We wanted the branches to extend over the ceiling so it would look like the tire was hanging from the tree. After they went home, I painted the tree. When the kids visit next, they can paint birds, squirrels or what ever else they decide to add to the tree mural. Here's an idea........If mom and dad saved some of your toys from when you were a kid, mix them in with your kids stuff for their playroom. This is what we did for our playroom and our grandkids got a big kick out of it. They enjoy playing with the toys that belonged to their mom as a little girl. Their mom, Jennifer, also had a lot of fun with a blast from the past. There were a lot of years of lugging all the toys with us and storing them, but it was worth it. Most of the board games are familiar, and than there are a couple like Pass the Booger that are not so familiar. We made a book case out of old wood crate boxes for the favorite books we saved.
We also have Jennifer's doll house that Greg and I built for her as a Christmas present. Greg was the architect and builder, I was the interior designer and decorator. We were both amatures but Jennifer liked her doll house. We thought our grandkids would want to do a little remodeling, but they like the doll house the way it is, Smurfs and all.
There is a basket of mom's old baby dolls including her very first baby doll. A couple....Kibble and Bits dolls....a family joke..... my attempt at trying to make Cabbage Patch dolls. Let's not forget Strawberry Shortcake, I made her too, she turned out a little better.
We found a shelf for $10 at Restore (Habitat for Humanity store) to display Jennifer's North American Bear Company's bear collection. We also found the makings for a desk at Restore. A $5 wood door that works great for a desk top and two cabinets for $20 to place at each end for desk drawers. We completed the desk with a couple mixed matched stools.
In keeping with the tree house idea, "different" art pieces were hung on the walls. We painted the bottom of our feet and walked on pieces of wood. We hung our painted feet above the desk. We also painted floor mats for the floor and to use as wall art. Louver doors were painted and hung in the stairway along with a window screen to frame art the kids painted.
A trellis made out of sticks makes a great wall hanging for a monkey to climb. Shadow boxes for memories of mini vacations we take while the kids are visiting in the summer. Part of a bamboo tree makes a great floor lamp. A light that was made to wrap around a head board for night time reading was wrapped around the bamboo instead.
It's funny how one object becomes the inspiration for the whole room. For this room it was centered around a tire that was sitting in the garage waiting to go to the dump. It's amazing the playroom decorating ideas you can come up with when you put your imagination to it.
