Desk Made out of Recycled Furniture and Materials

You don't have to sacrifice good looks for affordability. It's easy to make a functional desk with storage for any room in your house using recycled furniture and materials.

It's easy to find furniture and materials to recyle at Restore, salvaged yards, thrift stores and antique stores.

File cabinets, and kitchen cabinets provide drawers for storage and a sturdy top for placing a desk top. Doors make a great flat service for the desk top. If you find an awesome vintage looking wood paneled door you can always top it with glass.

A desk styled like the one pictured will look great against a wall or sitting in the center of a room. This type of desk provides ample work space. If more than one desk is needed angle two in the corner of a room or back to back in the center of a room.

We made the desk pictured for our tree house playroom in the attic. We purchased two kitchen cabinets from Restores for $10 each. They were already painted white so we just did a little touching up.

We purchased a solid wood door at Restores for $5. It reminds me of a sliding door for a closet from a modern home in the 50's or 60's. It has an inserted round door knob on one side so we turned it over and used the other side.

I sanded the door and stained it a honey color. We placed the door on top of the cabinets. Since it is against the wall, we did not secure the door to the cabinets. It's pretty solid and does not move easily.

There is plenty of room for two stools and two kids to work at the same time with their own set of drawers on each side of the desk.
