Snowman Crafts

The holidays are here and snowman crafts are a project the kids will love to help with. It doesn't matter if you make a sandman or build a snowman, they are jolly old souls.

I was in a crafty mood recently and made a few snowman decorations. Not out of snow, but out of cardboard boxes and glass globes.

I placed the snowmen decorations in our sun room where there are a lot of windows. I decided to make faces on both sides, so if we are outside looking in we see faces and inside looking out we see faces too.

The cardboard snowman is easy to make. He could also be made out of wood.

Materials Needed

  • 3 Cardboard boxes, small, medium and large
  • Craft paper or spray paint
  • Glue
  • Black, white and orange craft paint
  • Black spray paint
  • White glitter
  • Snowman hat ( $2 for a cardboard top hat at the craft store)
  • Fabric ( for the top hat )
  • Carrot for the nose ( I used a wood carrot I already had for one side and cut a carrot from discarded cardboard box flaps for the carrot on the reverse side.)
  • 5 - 6 buttons for one side, double if your completing both sides of snowman. ( 20 cents each for round wood buttons at the craft store or metal lids from empty jars.

How To Build a Cardboard Snowman;

Cut off cardboard flaps from the open sides of boxes so they stack better. Cover the boxes using craft paper and glue or spray paint each box. Buttons and carrot nose can be made with discarded cardboard flaps, draw shapes and cut out. Paint hat and buttons with black spray paint. Add glitter to buttons before paint dries. When hat is dry, glue fabric to the rim of top hat.

Paint carrot nose with orange craft paint. Lay boxes down and glue carrot nose and buttons in place. When glue has dried, draw a face for the snowman. If you are completing both sides of snowman, repeat above instructions. When gluing carrot nose on the opposite side, make sure it lines up with front side carrot nose.

For easy storage, do not glue boxes together, just stack them on top of each other and display.

Glass Globe Snowman;

  • Glass globe, any size you want ( I bought 3 small globes from Goodwill for $1 each )
  • Butter cream, black and white glass paint
  • Felt and patterned fabric for hat and scarf
  • Needle and thread or iron on adhesive
  • small bell for end of hat
  • Glue
  • Carrot nose ( made from cardboard or bought from the craft store )
  • 20 bulb string of lights

How To Make a Glass Globe Snowman;

Dab butter cream color paint on glass globe with sponge, set a side to dry. Make a scarf and hat and position them on the globe before painting face.

Measure felt around globe's head and cut. You want enough material to make a cuff at the forehead and a tail at the end of hat. Once you have the size needed to make the hat, cuff the side that will fit around the forehead, fold in half so the cuff is on the inside. Sew edges together, turn hat right side, pleat end of hat to make a tail and sew together, sew bell on tail.

Cut material for the scarf long enough to wrap around the neck of the globe and wide enough to fold and sew edges together. Sew a hem on each end of the scarf, fold in half and sew edges, turn right side. Place around the neck of globe securing with a safety pin. I used burlap to make one of the scarfs. I made a fringe edge by pulling thread from each end of scarf.

Glue the nose to globe, let dry, paint a snowman face. I used one 20 bulb string of lights for all three globes. Place lights from the bottom of globe joining each snowman, cord will be at the bottom, back side of globe to plug into extension cord or socket.

I hope you and your children enjoy these snowman crafts as much as I do!
