The chocolate strawberry shortcake can be made into one large cake by layering chocolate shortcakes, strawberries and whip cream or individual shortcakes to order.

Strawberry Chocolate Shortcake:

  • 2 Cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/3 Cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder (Dark Chocolate or Regular)
  • 1 T Baking Powder
  • 1 t Baking Soda
  • 1/2 Cup Cold Butter or Margarine
  • 1 Cup Buttermilk, Milk or Plain Low Fat Yogurt
  • Whip Cream
  • 1 Quart Strawberries, Rinsed, Drained, Hulled and Sliced
  • Chocolate Fudge Topping (Jar) or home made Hot fudge Sundae Sauce

Heat oven to 375. Grease 3 cookie sheets. In a large bowl mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and baking soda. Cut butter or margarine into pieces. With pastry blender or large fork cut butter into flour mixture until coarse crumbs form. With a fork stir in milk until mixture clumps together. You may have to add a little more milk.

To make one large cake, divide the ingredients onto cookie sheet to make 4 to 5 four inch round cakes. Sprinkle each with sugar. Bake for 10 - 15 minutes until pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool cakes completely.

Layer shortcakes by spreading whip cream onto each cake and topping with fresh sliced strawberries. Finish by topping with remaining whip cream and garnish with whole berries. Just before serving pour on hot fudge topping. Prepare no more than 2 hours before serving.

For individual shortcakes place ingredients by heaping tablespoons onto greased cookie sheets and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for about 10 minutes or until pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool and serve with strawberries, whip cream and hot fudge.

Makes about 12 servings.
