Trash to Treasure Crafts

Art isn't limited to paintings or photography. Art can be made from a variety of materials. For a unique art piece mix it up with interesting architectural pieces.

I'm an artist and I enjoy painting and drawing, but I also enjoy creating interesting art pieces like the shutters pictured. You don't have to know how to paint, draw or take pictures, just a little imagination is all that's required to create a unique craft project.

The walls in our house are painted neutral colors so the focus is on our art and accessories and not distracted by the color of the walls.

All the shutters pictured are colorful and very unique. They are made with all recycled materials. I made the shutter art about 20 years ago. They are timeless pieces that look great with all decor from modern to cottage and just about anything in between.

Materials Used;

  • Shutters (Pictured are 6 movable louver shutters).
  • Rags
  • Paint
  • 2 wood boards (used to connect the shutters).
  • Wood Screws (to attach the boards to the shutters).
  • Picture hanging wire

How to;

As pictured, connect the boards to the back side of the shutters on the top and bottom with screws to secure them together.

Attach picture hanging wire to the boards for hanging to the wall. As shown, insert rags in all the louvers.

Paint all the shutters with a solid color, the rags can be painted too. Finish by splattering different colors on the shutters, with brush strokes, and dripping paint.

Look for materials at thrift stores, antique stores, Restores, salvaged yards or where ever you can find used pieces of furniture or architectural pieces to create your own trash to treasure crafts.

Now you have a pretty simple piece of art that can be enjoyed from years to come.
