Halloween Vintage Hats
Halloween Vintage Hats Vintage hats paired with a few black masks add flair to Halloween decorations. Upcycle, repurpose and reuse to find embellishments for decorating the hats. I was inspired by thinking of the roaring 20's when women wore hats embellished with plumes, feathers and netting. Ladies dancing the Charleston with plumes and feathers bouncing on top of their heads, and looking erotic wearing a man's top hat embellished with lace and feathers, wrapped in a fur coat. I shopped around my house to find materials to make the hats. I started with a witches hat, top hat, and a baseball cap. I didn't have feathers but I do have ornamental grasses that grow plumes in the fall. I searched through Halloween decorations, a box of scrap materials, sewing box, closets and drawers for embellishments. The only tools I used were scissors, thread, needle and a glue gun.
Plumes are easy to use for decorating, just cut them from the ornamental grass, place them in a bucket to dry and fluff in the wind. They will last just like any other dried flower. Spray paint them any color you wish, the plumes are spray painted black for the vintage hats. Charleston Vintage Hat To make the Charleston vintage ladies hat; cut the sun visor from a baseball cap and glue material to the front and back side. The red netting is from one of my daughters old dance recital costumes spray painted black. Make a flower by rolling the net material, sew the bottom to hold the flower together. Cut enough netting to surround the hat, spray paint black. Sew the flower and netting to the hat and glue plumes using a glue gun. I like how a little red color still shows after spray painting the netting black.
Vintage Top Hat Start by trimming the top hat with fabric using a glue gun. The fabric was repurposed from an old comforter cover. Only one side of the hat was embellished with old tarnished keys, netting and plumes. Scrunch the netting into a bow and sew the center to hold it together, leave enough netting to drape over the edge of the hat's rim and sew it to the hat. I completed the hat by sewing the tarnished keys to the center and gluing the plumes.
Witch Vintage Hat The witches hat is trimmed with a sparkle sequin trim. I glued an old watch, skeleton hands, spiders, button and plumes to one side of the hat. The inside top of the hat is stuffed with fiber fill to make it stand. The hats are displayed on top of glass globes from hurricane lamps. The painted glass globes are from snowman decorations I made the previous year.
