Wrought Iron Headboard

Wrought Iron Headboard

I upcycled an iron porch rail into a chippy, vintage looking iron headboard. Vintage glass door knobs were used for the top of the post.

Our granddaughter Skylar likes vintage decor and had a few specific request for her bedroom.

Upcycling is an art, it's creative reuse by transforming an object for a different use. I find it very energizing, and I surprise myself with amazing finished projects.

I had so much fun creating my book, Upcycle Home Decor For All Seasons Including The Holidays.

I love the energy and creative process that goes into each project to make them unique. The chippy iron headboard cost very little to make.

The railing we had in our garage, and I purchased the two post from the salvage yard for $1.00. The vintage glass door knobs I found in an antique store for $5. The headboard measures 53"X45".

Sand railing and post with rough grit sandpaper to remove rust and dull the finish. Wash with soap and water. Use spray primer on the railing and post, paint with off white paint.

After paint is dried, measure from top and bottom of each post where to connect the rail. Drill a 1/4 inch hole into top and bottom of each post and connect the rail with bolts and nuts.

Distresss by sanding and chipping paint off in various areas. With a small paint brush, paint over chipped areas with French blue paint to make it look like layers of paint are underneath. Glaze with burnt umber paint to darken areas of the headboard to give it an aged appearance.

Complete by using a sponge paint brush to apply two coats of polyurethane. Use steel wool to dull surface in between coats of polyurethane. I topped the post with vintage door knobs that fit snug enough inside the top post so I didn't glue them.
